Tommy’s supports research into pregnancy complications, to make pregnancy and birth safer for all. The charity asked me to update the lay summaries of their research projects on their website. The aim was to make these summaries easier to understand and more engaging, as well as update the information with any progress made on the projects.
I wrote and edited more than 100 research lay summaries for Tommy’s, spanning a wide range of different types of research. Following on from the work I did, the charity is now carrying out an audit their research content, aiming to improve how they communicate their research impact.
Lizzie D’Angelo, Tommy’s Interim Marketing Director at the time, said:
“Richard was very proactive, and great at keeping us updated with the project. He was quick to ask questions, but also very comfortable working without close supervision or direction. This was a huge asset within our time-poor team.”

It was a real privilege to work on this project, and to learn more about the ground-breaking research that Tommy’s funds. I was really amazed by the breadth of the research taking place, and their dedication to translating discoveries in the lab into clinical trials to benefit mothers and babies.
Below are some examples of the lay summaries I wrote during this project:
